Why did I draw the girl, the background characters AND the background in full detail, just to blur them out and stick a face in the foreground? What an unexpected direction this all digital image took. I don't know what I'm doing.

don't fret, sometimes you have to completely draw something before you realize that it works better (in relation to the rest of the work) when it is altered, covered, completely eliminated, etc.

So that way you can reverse the blur, putting it on the guy and it feels like the camera is zooming from one to the other?

Your painting is dynamite! What's sad is that my vision is exactly that bad... face details come in a little farther than arms length.
